Hello Everyone,

This is Gael from Sylvia Rivera Law Project & Reg from Critical
Resistance and Queers for Economic Justice. We’re calling out to
folks interested in being part of the planning committee for a
Transforming Justice East Coast regional gathering.

First, a little about Transforming Justice. Back in October 2007,
Transforming Justice brought together over 200 formerly imprisoned
transgender people and allies to work together to:

*Build a shared conversation and analysis among the LGBT, anti-prison,
and prisoner rights movements about the root causes of imprisonment,
poverty, and criminalization in transgender communities;

*Prioritize and build leadership of transgender and gender
non-conforming people most impacted by prisons, poverty, and policing;

*Create space to share and develop strategies to end the cycles of
imprisonment, criminalization, and poverty in our communities.

A number of participants from the Northeast region who attended the
gathering Transforming Justice on October 13th & 14th in Oakland
California have been talking about organizing a regional gathering
similar to the national one maybe some where in New York, New Jersey
or Philadelphia. We want to build on the momentum from Transforming
Justice and continue to build a movement that challenges the Prison
Industrial Complex and talk about ways of supporting and strengthening
the work at the regional level.
We wanted to propose doing an initial conference call to check-in and
talk about our capacity to hold a gathering, would folks be down for
that?

Also, Critical Resistance is holding its 10 year anniversary
conference (CR10) this September out in Oakland, CA & we were
wondering if folks were interested going to the conference. Because a
lot of people nation wide are expected to attend, this could be a good
place to continue the conversations started at Transforming Justice
thru us doing workshops, panels & gathering together with other people
working on similar issues. If people are interested in going maybe we
could work on the workshop proposals all together (like at a regional
gathering!) & figure out other ways to implement Transforming Justice
into the whole conference. In addition, we thought of bringing back
the Queer Visibility collaboration between various folks attending
CR10, similar to the organizing we did for the US Social Forum which
not only implemented queer visibility throughout the forum in terms of
trainings and internal accountability to queer and trans issues but
also brought the participation of queer and trans speakers at various
panels and other presentations throughout the conference. If folks
who were involved then want to bring this group back for CR10 please
join the call and let us know.

non-conforming former prisoners who would like to be part of the

There are more than 2.3 million people locked up in prisons and jails around the United States.  There are 58 people listed on this one particular list.  Queer folks in prisons and jails are suffering and need to be reminded that they are loved and not forgotten.  Please drop someone or multiple folks a post card.  Send a long detailed letter.  Get to know someone.  However it is that you communicate, do it.  Send a picture your god-child drew.  List their name on a prayer list.  Whatever it is you do, PLEASE connect!  We will dismantle this system one day and need to build relationships in order to see that happen.

Transgender activists and allies to hold press
conference in response to brutal police attack at the Sylvia Rivera Law
Project Fifth Anniversary

On Wednesday, September 26, 2007, officers from the New York Police
Department’s 9th precinct made an unprovoked attack, employing
excessive use of force against members of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project
and other community members. While pepper-spraying a group of people
who were gathered outside of a celebration and benefit for the
organization’s five year anniversary, the police also violently
arrested two people from the crowd, Ileana Mendez-Penate and Reggie
Gossett. These two people were released the following night, and all
charges were dropped.

A press conference will be held on Monday, October 1st @ 2pm on the
front steps of New York City Hall in Lower Manhattan. We at The Sylvia
Rivera Law Project would like to thank all the local elected officials
and their staffers, especially Rosie Mendez and her staff, who had a
hand in the eventual release of the two detainees.

WHO: Community members and Allies of the Sylvia Rivera Law
Project, including the two arrestees, Reggie Gossett and Ileana
Mendez-Penate.

WHAT: A press conference on the steps of New York City Hall.

WHEN: 2:00 pm, Monday October 1, 2007.

WHERE: On the Steps of New York City Hall, in City Hall Park between Broadway, Park Row and Chambers Street.

WHY: By holding this press conference, transgender activists and
allies prepare to send the message that excessive unprovoked police
force and false arrests by the 9th precinct or any other precinct will
not be tolerated.

UPDATE: 8:30pm Thursday 9/27

Reggie and Ileana have just been released from police custody! The DA
declined prosecution, which means that no charges are being pressed.
They are free and clear, and are now getting the support they need
from their community - in person.

We are all thrilled by this result, the only truly just outcome after
a long night and day of injustice. Thank you to everyone who has
helped out and expressed support, including all of the allied
organizations, fellow activists, community members and council people
who stepped up to support us.

Although they have thankfully been released, our work around this
incident is not finished. Now it is time to hold the police
accountable for the unnecessary force and community targeting that
occurred last night, and work so that no more incidents like this
happen again. We will keep you all posted as to our
next steps and ways to plug in.

Tragically the campaign to stop the development of the Chicopee Women’s Jail in Chicopee, Massachusetts was unsuccessful.  Many, many people have worked over many years to stop this jail from opening.  September 13th is the scheduled day of the dedication, read the story here.  

 This jail will house primarily low income, poor, not violent, women of color.  The prison system within this country is a devastating stain on our ability to do justice.  Please visit the Statewide Harm Reduction Coalition website to learn more about the history of the campaign to stop the jail. 

To those queer folks who are yet to understand how this applies to us, please understand that many of the individuals who will be detained (many of whom will be subject to torture, sexual violence, regular assault, etc.) will be same gender loving women, lesbian, queer women, gender non-conforming folks.  This is because the system of oppression that perpetuates the prison system targets us.  Please remember this! 

This is our last couple of weeks to stop it from opening.  What kind of action is left to be taken?
